With the border of Wales a mere five minutes away by car and with easy access to the area provided by the M4 M5, M50 and A40, visitors are attracted from various directions to this scenic and historic part of the country.
Just as the surrounding area is steeped in history (think pre historic caves, Neolithic settlements, Roman forts and Medieval castles) so does the Wilton Court evoke a rich sense of the past. Before the bridge over to Ross on Wye was built, this spot was the main fording point – with barges running up and down it – the river was an important trading route. At that time too, the property had an active role within the local community serving as the Magistrates Court. The original block (the west wing) was built in 1500 with the timber – constructed north wing added in 1700. What is now the River view Restaurant and Bar was once the courthouse itself while the room above was the Judges Chambers. Centuries ago the buildings cellars (which are now bricked in) lead through a passage way to the jail – now the nearby White Lion pub.
